Julia Cooper paints abstract and figurative paintings using different media including oil paint, watercolour and mixed media. Sometimes starting on the floor, canvas or board is washed with colour which is then scored, scraped back or obliterated to create an interesting narrative which allows her to explore colour and rhythm. The image is tentatively discovered through this process. Her studio overlooks Fowey harbour where the changes of light on the water’s surface are more often reflected in her use of colour.
Julia has had exhibitions in various galleries throughout Cornwall and Open Studios in Cornwall and Bristol. Her paintings are exhibited in restaurants and hotels and her studio featured in Cornwall Today. She was also included in Cornish Muse, Helen Hoyle’s ‘Women Artists’ and Artist of the Month. Her studies include a Fine Art Diploma with Distinction, Interior Design Diploma, OCA and City & Guilds. She continues to study 20thC Art. Julia worked with the Cornwall National Trust as designer on their 87 holiday cottage refurbishment programme.
