A teenager was rescued by Fowey lifeboat on Thursday 10th July – after treading water for two hours in very cold seas.

The 18 year old had capsized and dismasted, throwing him into the sea. With not enough signal to ring 999, and just enough to post on Facebook, he updated his status to read ‘STRANDED’ – read byA  concerned mate who rang the lad’s mum.

Fowey lifeboats  launched a rescue operation just after 11pm, heading out to search towards Pentewan, near Mevagissey.

Christian Phelps, volunteer crew member said: ‘We were searching the area when our search light picked up what we thought was a lobster pot marker. When we looked again, it started waving and we realised it was the young lad. He was incredibly lucky that we found him and we’re delighted that we were in the right place at the right time.’

The young sailor had been treading water for about 2 hours, dressed in just a t-shirt and shorts.

He is now safe and well.
